Reply-To: Lawmen-owner@googlegroups.com

Lest you think I have a partisan politics mentality, I hereby disclaim any and all partisanship in bringing you Judicial Watch’s list below.  These people are slime-balls (criminals) and should be tossed summarily out of all public office.

http://www.judicialwatch.org/judicial-watch-announces-list-washington-s-ten-most-wanted-corrupt-politicians-2007

Judicial Watch Announces List of Washington’s “Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians” for 2007
Washington, DC –Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today released its 2007 list of Washington’s “Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians.”  The list, in alphabetical order, includes:
1.  Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY):  In addition to her long and sordid ethics record, Senator Hillary Clinton took a lot of heat in 2007 – and rightly so – for blocking the release her official White House records.  Many suspect these records contain a treasure trove of information related to her role in a number of serious Clinton-era scandals.  Moreover, in March 2007, Judicial Watch filed an ethics complaint against Senator Clinton for filing false financial disclosure forms with the U.S. Senate (again).  And Hillary’s top campaign contributor, Norman Hsu, was exposed as a felon and a fugitive from justice in 2007.  Hsu pleaded guilt to one count of grand theft for defrauding investors as part of a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme.
2.  Rep. John Conyers (D-MI):  Conyers reportedly repeatedly violated the law and House ethics rules, forcing his staff to serve as his personal servants, babysitters, valets and campaign workers while on the government payroll.  While the House Ethics Committee investigated these allegations in 2006, and substantiated a number of the accusations against Conyers, the committee blamed the staff and required additional administrative record-keeping and employee training.  Judicial Watch obtained documentation in 2007 from a former Conyers staffer that sheds new light on the activities and conduct on the part of the Michigan congressman, which appear to be at a minimum inappropriate and likely unlawful.  Judicial Watch called on the Attorney General in 2007 to investigate the matter.
3.  Senator Larry Craig (R-ID):  In one of the most shocking scandals of 2007, Senator Craig was caught by police attempting to solicit sex in a Minneapolis International Airport men’s bathroom during the summer.  Senator Craig reportedly “sent signals” to a police officer in an adjacent stall that he wanted to engage in sexual activity.  When the police officer showed Craig his police identification under the bathroom stall divider and pointed toward the exit, the senator reportedly exclaimed 'No!'”  When asked to produce identification, Craig presented police his U.S. Senate business card and said, “What do you think of that?”  The power play didn’t work.  Craig was arrested, charged and entered a guilty plea.  Despite enormous pressure from his Republican colleagues to resign from the Senate, Craig refused.
4.  Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA):  As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee's subcommittee on military construction, Feinstein reviewed military construction government contracts, some of which were ultimately awarded to URS Corporation and Perini, companies then owned by Feinstein's husband, Richard Blum. While the Pentagon ultimately awards military contracts, there is a reason for the review process. The Senate's subcommittee on Military Construction's approval carries weight. Sen. Feinstein, therefore, likely had influence over the decision making process.  Senator Feinstein also attempted to undermine ethics reform in 2007, arguing in favor of a perk that allows members of Congress to book multiple airline flights and then cancel them without financial penalty.  Judicial Watch’s investigation into this matter is ongoing.
5.  Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY):  Giuliani came under fire in late 2007 after it was discovered the former New York mayor’s office “billed obscure city agencies for tens of thousands of dollars in security expenses amassed during the time when he was beginning an extramarital relationship with future wife Judith Nathan in the Hamptons…”  ABC News also reported that Giuliani provided Nathan with a police vehicle and a city driver at taxpayer expense.  All of this news came on the heels of the federal indictment on corruption charges of Giuliani’s former Police Chief and business partner Bernard Kerik, who pleaded guilty in 2006 to accepting a $165,000 bribe in the form of renovations to his Bronx apartment from a construction company attempting to land city contracts.
6.  Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR):  Governor Huckabee enjoyed a meteoric rise in the polls in December 2007, which prompted a more thorough review of his ethics record.  According to The Associated Press:  “[Huckabee’s] career has also been colored by 14 ethics complaints and a volley of questions about his integrity, ranging from his management of campaign cash to his use of a nonprofit organization to subsidize his income to his destruction of state computer files on his way out of the governor’s office.”  And what was Governor Huckabee’s response to these ethics allegations?  Rather than cooperating with investigators, Huckabee sued the state ethics commission twice and attempted to shut the ethics process down.
7.  I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby:  Libby, former Chief of Staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was sentenced to 30 months in prison and fined $250,000 for lying and obstructing the Valerie Plame CIA leak investigation.  Libby was found guilty of four felonies -- two counts of perjury, one count of making false statements to the FBI and one count of obstructing justice – all serious crimes.  Unfortunately, Libby was largely let off the hook.  In an appalling lack of judgment, President Bush issued “Executive Clemency” to Libby and commuted the sentence.
8.  Senator Barack Obama (D-IL):  A “Dishonorable Mention” last year, Senator Obama moves onto the “ten most wanted” list in 2007.  In 2006, it was discovered that Obama was involved in a suspicious real estate deal with an indicted political fundraiser, Antoin “Tony” Rezko.  In 2007, more reports surfaced of deeper and suspicious business and political connections.  It was reported that just two months after he joined the Senate, Obama purchased $50,000 worth of stock in speculative companies whose major investors were his biggest campaign contributors.  One of the companies was a biotech concern that benefited from legislation Obama pushed just two weeks after the senator purchased $5,000 of the company’s shares.  Obama was also nabbed conducting campaign business in his Senate office, a violation of federal law.
9.  Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA):  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who promised a new era of ethics enforcement in the House of Representatives, snuck a $25 million gift to her husband, Paul Pelosi, in a $15 billion Water Resources Development Act recently passed by Congress.  The pet project involved renovating ports in Speaker Pelosi's home base of San Francisco.  Pelosi just happens to own apartment buildings near the areas targeted for improvement, and will almost certainly experience a significant boost in property value as a result of Pelosi's earmark.  Earlier in the year, Pelosi found herself in hot water for demanding access to a luxury Air Force jet to ferry the Speaker and her entourage back and forth from San Francisco non-stop, in unprecedented request which was wisely rejected by the Pentagon.  And under Pelosi’s leadership, the House ethics process remains essentially shut down – which protects members in both parties from accountability.
10.  Senator Harry Reid (D-NV):  Over the last few years, Reid has been embroiled in a series of scandals that cast serious doubt on his credibility as a self-professed champion of government ethics, and 2007 was no different.  According to The Los Angeles Times, over the last four years, Reid has used his influence in Washington to help a developer, Havey Whittemore, clear obstacles for a profitable real estate deal.  As the project advanced, the Times reported, “Reid received tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Whittemore.”  Whittemore also hired one of Reid’s sons (Leif) as his personal lawyer and then promptly handed the junior Reid the responsibility of negotiating the real estate deal with federal officials.  Leif Reid even called his father’s office to talk about how to obtain the proper EPA permits, a clear conflict of interest.

Study about damage by cell phones etc

Cell Towers, Phones & Wi-Fi -
Radiation Poisoning Of US

"Wireless communications radiation is to America today what DDT,
thalidomide, dioxin, benzene, Agent Orange and asbestos were
yesterday."

"In 2000, European communications giant T-Mobile commissioned the
German ECOLOG Institute to review all available scientific evidence
in regard to health risks for wireless telecommunications. ECOLOG
found over 220 peer-reviewed, published papers documenting the
cancer-initiating and cancer-promoting effects of the high frequency
radiation employed by wireless technology."4 Many corroborating
studies have been published since.

By 2004, 12 research groups from seven European countries cooperating
in the REFLEX study project confirmed that microwaves from wireless
communications devices cause significant single and double strand DNA
breaks in both human and animal cells under laboratory conditions.5
In 2005, a Chinese medical study confirmed statistically significant
DNA damage from pulsed microwaves at cell phone levels.6 That same
year, University of Chicago researchers described how pulsed
communications microwaves alter gene expression in human cells at
non-thermal exposure levels.7

Because gamma waves and RF/microwave radiation are identically
carcinogenic and genotoxic to the cellular roots of life, the safe
dose of either kind of radiation is zero. No study has proven that
any level of exposure from cell-damaging radiation is safe for
humans. Dr. Carlo confirms that cell damage is not dose dependant
because any exposure level, no matter how small, can trigger damage
response by cell mechanisms. "

Sprint-Nextel and Clearwire are now rolling out in U.S. cities
tower-mounted WiMAX transmitters providing wireless internet access
"to die for." WiMAX is WiFi on steroids. Upon startup of WiMAX
transmitters near the Swedish village of Gotene, the emergency room
at the local hospital was flooded by calls from people overcome with
pulmonary and cardiovascular symptoms.

Aging Younger

Twelve steps to aging younger
By STEVEN GRAY Chicago Tribune
Published: Monday, October 15, 2007
Michael Roizen, M.D., and cofounder of RealAge.com, has done an exhaustive review of more than 35,000 medical and scientific studies about aging in humans. He has uncovered many of the mysteries of how and why we age, and shares the simple things we can do to make our "real age," which can be older or younger than what the calendar says, younger.

Here are his tips to help make a woman's real age younger in as little as 90 days. Anyone can receive a personalized, science-based plan to live younger by taking the RealAge Test for free at RealAge.com.

1. An aspirin a day after age 40: Taking one 325 mg. tablet of aspirin per day can make your real age as much as 1.9 years younger.

2. Floss your teeth: Flossing and brushing daily can make your real age 6.4 years younger.

3. Know your blood pressure: A person with low blood pressure (115/75 mm Hg) is as much as 25 years younger than a person with high blood pressure (greater than 160/90 mm Hg).

4. Reduce stress: In highly stressful times, your real age can be as much as 32 years older than your calendar age. By building strong social networks and adopting stress-reduction strategies, you can erase 30 of those 32 years of aging caused by stress.

5. Take your vitamins: Regularly taking vitamin C (1,200 mg/day), vitamin E (400 IU/day), calcium (1,000-1,200 mg/day), vitamin D (400-600 IU/day), folate (400 mcg/day), and vitamin B6 (6 mg/day) can make your real age 6 years younger.

6. Quit smoking and avoid passive smoke: Smoking makes your real age 8 years older.

7. Be active: Even a small amount of exercise - two 20-minute walks per day - can make your real age nearly 5 years younger.

8. Wear your seat belt: Regularly wearing a seat belt and driving within 5 miles per hour of the speed limit can make your real age as much as 3.4 years younger.

9. Fill up on fiber: Getting 25 grams of fiber per day in your diet can make your real age 2.5 years younger than if you only included 12 grams of fiber per day in your diet.

10. Monitor your health: People who are proactive about seeking high-quality medical care and managing chronic conditions can have a real age as much as 12 years younger than their peers who do not.

11. Laugh: Laughter reduces stress, strengthens the immune system and can make your real age as much as 8 years younger.

12. Become a lifelong learner: People who remain intellectually involved throughout their lives have a real age as much as 2.5 years younger.

Reminder: Take the real age test: Develop an age-reduction plan. Over your lifetime, you can make your real age as much as 26 years younger.

Compiled from Dr. Michael Roizen's books, including his newest book, "YOU: Staying Young" (Free Press), to be released Oct. 30.

lipstick has lead

When you're shopping for lipstick, you shouldn't have to cross
your fingers and hope you get something good.

An October report by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, of which
EWG is a founding member, found lead in 61% of the 33 top-brand
lipsticks tested -- including L'Oreal, Cover Girl, and Christian Dior.

Lead is linked to learning and behavioral problems, but alarmingly,
FDA doesn't regulate it in cosmetics.

help the Burnese

Aloha, Friends!

Please go to the link below and sign a petition to help protect more peace-loving people from the repression of the war machine.

Thank you!
Barbara

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_burma/t.php

Dear friends,
Burma's generals have brought their brutal iron hand down on peaceful monks and protesters -- but in response, a massive global outcry is gathering pace. The roar of global public opinion is being heard in hundreds of protests outside Chinese and Burmese embassies, people round the world wearing the monks' color red, and on the internet-- where our petition has exploded to over 200,000 signers in just 72 hours.
People power can win this. Burma's powerful sponsor China can halt the crackdown, if it believes that its international reputation and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing depend on it. To convince the Chinese government and other key countries, Avaaz is launching a major global and Asian ad campaign on Wednesday, including full page ads in the Financial Times and other newspapers, that will deliver our message and the number of signers. We need 1 million voices to be the global roar that will get China's attention. If every one of us forwards this email to just 20 friends, we'll reach our target in the next 72 hours. Please sign the petition at the link below -if you haven't already- and forward this email to everyone you care about:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_burma/t.php
The pressure is working - already, there are signs of splits in the Burmese Army, as some soldiers refuse to attack their own people. The brutal top General, Than Shwe, has reportedly moved his family out of the country – he must fear his rule may crumble.
The Burmese people are showing incredible courage in the face of horror. We're broadcasting updates on our effort over the radio into Burma itself – telling the people that growing numbers of us stand with them. Let's do everything we can to help them – we have hours, not days, to do it. Please sign the petition and forward this email to at least 20 friends right now. Scroll down our petition page for details of times and events to join in the massive wave of demonstrations happening around the world at Burmese and Chinese embassies.
With hope and determination,
Ricken, Paul, Pascal, Graziela, Galit, Ben, Milena and the whole Avaaz Team

My testimony to keep Strykers out of Hawaii

Blog readers: After reading my testimny, please write your own protest to the militarization of our islands.

Hawaii Resident Voices Opposition

U.S. Army Stryker Brigade in Hawai’i

Public comments may be submitted to U.S. Army by Oct 30, 2007

Email to: PublicComments@aec.apgea.army.mil.

May I ask you what it is about the word NO that you do not understand?

When you asked for our input about Strykers years ago, we told you “NO”--we do not want Strykers on the Hawaiian Islands. Now, as if we did not tell you clearly, you ask us again for our input. Last night in Hilo ( September 25, 2007), I understand that numerous, passionate people, some of whom are native Hawaiians begging you to not destroy their temples or desecrate their sacred aina, have eloquently implored you to stop using Strykers—here or anywhere.

What did you hear when these Big Island people spoke? The newspaper reported that you understand that you need to “wash” the Strykers carefully when importing them from island to island on your “non-identified military carrier”—the Superferry. You really don’t seem to understand that when you listen to what we are saying, there will be no need to wash your Strykers because we see no need for Strykers at all. We didn’t need Davey Crockett weaponry in the ‘60s (that polluted our land) and we don’t need Stryker’s now (to unearth that pollution). We don’t buy into the imaginary aggressive enemy you would have us buy.

As the military gears up to spend enormous amounts of pork-barrel tax payer’s dollars on more unwanted Strykers and more trained soldiers to operate these unwanted Strykers to prepare for an ill-conceived, unwarranted, unjust and illegal battle, have you ever stopped to think that this kind of combat is jeopardizing our safety? Gearing up for war, in whatever country our military/industrial complex deems “the enemy of choice” (so they can personally continue to line their overstuffed pockets with dollars, despite the cost of human lives), is simply hazardous to our personal health and national security. Reports of military studies show that after “fighting terrorism” in the way our “Commander and Chief” has insisted upon doing since 9/11, Americans are now less safe in the world.

Attacking has done nothing but ruin our reputation in the world and create more people hating us for being aggressors in their land! (Can you imagine what just a small percentage of those trillions of dollars wasted on this obscene war could have done to promote peace and understanding in the world?)

Is it not time, as individuals with brains, for all American citizens to stand up and question our out-of-control, war-bent, alcoholic president? Hawaii hero, Lt. Ehren Watada (as well as 20 generals!!!), was right when he said he could “not follow illegal orders”. Every serviceman is required to follow legal orders, protecting us from enemies within and without, and to use common sense to distinguish whether or not an order is right or wrong. We know now, beyond a shadow of a doubt, President Bush lied to all of us regarding our need to go to war against Iraq. Does this fact not bother you and lead you to question the poor judgment of your commander, as well as his sanity and the continued direction of the illegal, un-winnable war he is promoting.

Does it not give you pause to think that Bush is now talking seriously of escalating the war, attacking more innocent people (90% of whom are civilians without weapons) in yet another country which also has done nothing to deserve to be indiscriminately destroyed by the hundreds of thousands? I see this as gross criminal terrorism at it’s very worst.

Strykers and those brainwashed individual who operate Strykers are simply little pawns in this horrific game of war our President is playing with your lives. And the aggression our military is ordered to carry out in the world, simply put, is unconscionable.

Using Weapons of Mass Destruction is definitely wrong. Strykers use Depleted Uranium, known as DU—a weapon of mass destruction (defined as a weapon that “kills indiscriminately“). Do you not realize that you are jeopardizing your health, the health of your unborn children as well our health and the health of the planet when you play “war games” with WMD? Have you no awareness of the Gulf War Syndrome plaguing your colleagues? Using WMD is against international laws created to protect all of us. Even the United States created laws protecting soldiers from depleted uranium. These laws have been grievously ignored—much to the detriment of soldiers who were instructed to use these weapons—and did so without question.

Every serviceman in the United States military needs to question what is happening with this war that is not supported by 85% of Americans. Just like the Viet Nam war that Secretary of Defense Macnamara in recent years admitted was a big mistake, the war with Iraq is wrong. It must be stopped--in the same way the war in Viet Nam was stopped—by our soldiers refusing to fight. In Iraq (and here in this room tonight), soldiers using their conscience to determine that the war is wrong, can and must individually and collectively refuse to continue fighting.

Do not bring Strykers to our beautiful island, stirring up the DU that is already contaminating our sacred aina, allowing the wind to move it to where we live, downwind.

Aborting the action before us now, the escalation of Strykers in Hawaii, is one of the ways that we can work together as concerned citizens and aware soldiers, to say NO to this insane and unjust war. Instead, we need to give birth to a new era, where all aggression is dissolved.

Please use your energy to clean-up the DU mess that you finally admitted to having created at Pohakuloa. After cleaning it up, close it down! We do not want the military on this island, putting us at risk.

I implore you to wake up and be men and women of conscience, doing the right thing: eliminate Strykers not only from Hawaii—but from this planet that must become peaceful because war is not a sane alternative that we can tolerate any longer.

I pray that you will search your hearts and souls, using your brains, your integrity, and common sense, knowing that, the only reasonable action to take to defend America from terrorism, is to create understanding and harmony in our world.

As Kyle Kajihiro, of American Friends Service Committee, said, “Live fire in the Aloha State is inappropriate.”

Hawaii, the Aloha State, is the perfect place for this revolution of peace to go forth, arm in arm with our Burmese sisters and brothers. For your sake as well as ours, PLEASE HEAR US LOUD AND CLEAR—once and for all--when we say NO to Strykers.

In honor of my brother, Jim

Thanks to Jim, I got this tomdispatch email today:
Freedom as Theft
Honoring American Liberators

By Tom Engelhardt
Let's take a trip down memory lane.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is America's highest civilian award, ranking
second only to the Congressional Medal of Honor. According to its official website,
the medal "is reserved for individuals the President deems to have made especially
meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United
States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private
endeavors." In 2004, George W. Bush had already awarded the medal to Estee Lauder,
Arnold Palmer, Norman Podhoretz, and Doris Day, among others, when, on December 14
in a ceremony at the White House, he hit the trifecta.
Jim used to do this number where he started with, "I sez to myself, Jim (I call myself 'Jim').
I sez to myself, "Barbara "(I call myself Barbara), "Who the hell is Norman Podharetz?"
Google gave me the answer:
NORMAN'S NARCISSISM: PODHORETZ IN LOVE
The narcissism of Norman Podhoretz has for years inflicted us with a seemingly endless stream of autobiographical musings that, one day, may be the subject of a psychological case study: like a hot-air balloon, his oeuvre expands inexorably and exponentially, year after year, with new tales of his triumphs, his friends, his ex-friends, his feuds, and, most of all, his own sense of self-importance. This is a man incapable of writing in any but the first person. His latest book, My Love Affair With America: The Cautionary Tale of a Cheerful Conservative, is even more rambling and self-indulgent than previous efforts, and might just as well have been titled My Love Affair With Myself: Tall Tales of a Nattering Narcissist. This lack of structure – and, on occasion, even coherence – turns out to be a virtue, however inadvertent, in that it reveals much more than the author intended. Packaged as a paean to his own puffed-up image of himself as the quintessential American patriot, this book is the kind of confession that comes easily to a man who no longer has the art or the inclination to hide his true character as the supreme opportunist.

Good info about Stroke Indentification

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ.. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this...
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE(Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their
tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other
that is also an indication of a stroke. If he or she has trouble with
ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately!! And describe the
symptoms to the dispatcher.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to
10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Wish you were here!

Lucky us! Phoenix created another phantasmagoic meal tonight. Can you believe how pretty this salad is? And it tastes even better than it looks.
Our honeymooners hot-footed it back here to join us after eating dinner with us last night, knowin how tasty the food is here. When i told Dennis that the long red flowers are amaranth, he commented that he loved the amaranth we ate for breakfast--flavored with Bengal Spice tea.
I feel so nourished as I put together my words to submit to oppose the huge build up of military on the islands--using new sonar and laser technology. No one seems to know how damaging the hydrogen fluoride fall out is with lasers. Whales have been known to beach themselves right after sonar testing is done--like they are trying to tell us that they have a headache they can't contend with. I've never been much of an activist..but i feel like allowing the military to go unchecked is like committing global suicide. Hopefully, my small voice, encouraging all of you to use your small voices, may have an effect on stopping the Military/Industrial Complex:
To whom it may concern:
When I was a child, Eisenhower led me to believe that peace was the only solution to our world problems. I believed him then and now I believe more than ever that he was right. Every time war has happened since World War II, I have felt that it is because we did not pay attention to Ike’s wise advice. He warned us to beware of the Military/Industrial Complex.
With the trillions of dollars being spent on antagonizing other nations by occupying their countries and asserting our military power with bigger and better and more expensive weapons, we can safely say that the MILITARY/INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IS OUT OF CONTROL.
We need to stop this madness and treat all peoples with respect and kindness, helping them with their problems instead of being a problem.
I am particularly concerned about harming whales and dolphins, as well as other creatures including humans. Sonar and laser warfare is ill-conceived and untested technological madness that may have unknown disastrous results.
I realize that your livelihood is based on promoting war. But what is this doing for your grandchildren? If your children are in Iraq now, they will likely have deformed babies that look blistered when they are born.
Please stop and think, is war right-livelihood? The answer is No!
Americans have awakened to the absurdity of our leaders taking our sons and daughters into battle with people who we don’t hate or fear and who have done nothing to harm us. We are not buying that line any more. And we will not put up with killing a million people—especially when 90% of them are unarmed civilians. Forcing our service people to kill innocent Iraqis is something that eats at the souls of these individuals for the rest of their lives.
Military operations have polluted Hawaii. Depleted Uranium is now here with us for the next 450,000 years. Why are you destroying our Paradise? Because no one has stopped you? There are now many people in Hawaii on to the fact that you have raped one of the most pristine places on the planet. We believe that live fire in the Aloha State is particularly inappropriate and will no longer allow it to happen here. We no don’t trust you to look after the welfare of our air, water, or land and it’s inhabitants.
Now that you have finally admitted to polluted this sacred aina with DU, we ask that you close down Pahokuloa as a military training center--after you do whatever you can to clean up the land so that it might be returned to native Hawaiians where it rightfully belongs.

From: Bill of Rights Defense Committee

Subject: [Alert] Sept 19--Call to Restore Habeas and Fourth Amendment (Corrected)

Please forward widely!

September 19, Cast Your Vote to Restore Constitutional Protections during the National Call-in to Congress!

Dear Lily,

Next week is National Call-in to Congress Week on two laws that have savaged centuries of constitutional protections -- The Military Commissions Act and the Protect America Act. Congress must act decisively this fall to restore Habeas Corpus and Fourth Amendment guards against unchecked government surveillance. They must not continue to allow this executive branch to violate those essential building blocks of our rights as people.

The national coalition member listed below are urging their members to call Congress on a specific day. BORDC's day is Wednesday, September 19.

Thank you for your calls and visits to members of Congress about their votes on the Military Commissions Act, which strips habeas corpus from most people in the world, and also for your work to remind Congressional representatives that the so-called Protect America Act fundamentally damages our Fourth Amendment protections when it allows the government to mine our communications for data without any court oversight. Please join in this call-in to help us keep the phones ringing in the halls of Congress all week long!

Restore Habeas Corpus!

Several bills have already been introduced to fix the Military Commissions Act (MCA), but none has made it to the House or Senate floor for a vote. See BORDC's legislation page for summaries of current bills. Soon both the House Judiciary Committee and the House Armed Services Committee will be considering H.R. 2826, To amend titles 28 and 10, United States Code, to restore habeas corpus. With their support, the bill would go the House floor for a vote.

It's time to insist that Congress move forward on restoring the 800-year-old protection against arbitrary and indefinite government detentions -- habeas corpus. Ask your representative to support H.R. 2826, another proposed bill, or an overturning of the MCA. More talking points are available here.

Restore the Fourth Amendment!

House and Senate leadership have promised to "fix" the "Protect America Act" this month. Your calls to your members of Congress may make the difference between cosmetic changes and a bill that leaves our Fourth Amendment protection open to unreasonable searches and seizures. More talking points are available here.

Make Your Calls

Please join this effort by calling Congress this Wednesday, September 19th, and ask your friends to do the same.

Make sure your voice is heard and your "vote" counted by using the BORDC Call-in page to find your legislators' direct Washington office phone numbers and to report back to us how many calls you made and how your calls went. We'll report to Congress how many of you raised your voices on these two issues.

OR

Dial the Capitol switchboard, 202-224-3121, and ask the operator to connect you (24 hours a day)

Please phone both your Senators and your Representative.

Can't get through right away? Many people must be phoning Congress. Keep your calls coming! If you prefer not to wait, call the next day or look up the phone number for the district office.

Military Commissions Act Roll Call Votes and Message

See how they voted on the Military Commissions Act (S 3930) here:

House roll call vote
Senate roll call vote

Remind your rep. or senator who voted for the MCA, or who did not vote, that each individual must have the right to challenge their detention before an impartial judge. Without that protection, people are judged guilty without due process, and presumption of innocence that used to guide our legal system is now a sham.

Protect America Act Roll Call Votes and Message

See how they voted on the administration's Protect America Act (S. 1927) here.

House roll-call vote
Senate roll-call vote

Remind your rep. or senator who voted for the PAA, or who did not vote, that Congress passed the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) because the executive branch had been wiretapping Americans without warrants. The Protect America Act legalizes warrantless surveillance of Americans without any judicial oversight or meaningful reporting to Congress, and it therefore needs to be overturned.

Other organizations supporting the call-in week (partial list) include the Alliance for Justice, American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International USA, DownsizeDC.org, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Human Rights First, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, No2Torture Network, and People For the American Way.

Thank you for all you do!

About my brother, Jim

Yesterday, Phoenix helped me put out a new Dragonflyer newsletter to over 1300 people. I wrote the letter on Sept. 7 when I learned of my brother's unexpected death:
ONE LESS JIM
I just got a call from my family on the mainland telling me that my dear brother, Jim Moore, was found dead this morning in his home in Idaho. I am in shock. He just turned 66 and was not in ill health. I'm sitting here, processing this devastating information as I write through my tears. My brother was notoriously a man of few words—mostly “Yep, Nope and Maybe”--but when he made sentences, his words were always directly to the point, and more often than not, quite funny. Jim's emails (onemoorejim) like this satire he sent me, saying only, “Gotta love the Onion,” were never wordy.

His signature tag was, “Life is too important to be taken seriously.” Yet Jim seriously felt the unjustness of torture and turned me on to tomdispatch.com to understand the bald truth, humorously stated, behind the news we see.

It is odd that just yesterday I was reading what a Kauai friend wrote about his buddy who died. I saved the following two sentences, thinking that I might someday want to quote these words:
“…I feel some tears well up, but these tears come from great joy, for I can feel the Light ‘on the other side’ brightening as the Oneness receives a Great Soul who has come home. It is a time of celebration.”
I know Jim was not one for flowery words or even a belief that would necessarily embrace this concept. But if ever there was a Great Soul who lived his life his way with great integrity, and shined a Bright Light, it was my brother, Jim. He cared for both our mother and father like only the most loving of a son could care. He tenderly brought up his two sons like only the most patient and loving of a father could raise his sons. And, in the tradition of his father, continued being a very caring life partner to the wife he loved and lived apart from. I’m sure that his beloved Elaine, the love of his life; his precious sons, Darren and Eric; his loving brother, Rip; his cousins (especially Wendell); and numerous friends would all say that Jim was a VERY Great Soul. Because he was such a Great Soul, having “one less Jim” is too important to not be taken seriously. He will be sorely missed.
What I find hard to accept at this moment is that Jim’s death is just so sudden…and so final. I know that time will make accepting his transition easier. Now, it comforts me to recall the Hawaiian belief that “only bodies die, not people.” Also, I give thanks that Jim did not suffer. Quickly is a good way to go. And I feel certain that if it is possible, our dear parents will embrace Jim’s Bright Light on “the other side” where the three of them can have a “coming home” party, with some good belly laughs.
In Idaho on Oct. 20, on this side of that “thin veil”, the Moore/Wyse/Starke families will come together to comfort one another, to celebrate Jim Moore, telling funny stories about our dear “Jimmy”, toasting to his stellar life--with “strawberry daiquiris”, as was his wish.

"I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark would burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time."

Today, i recieved this tender email from someone I have never met:

The 10 Best Foods You May Not Be Eating

Want to do your body a world of good? It's as easy as expanding your grocery list
By: Jonny Bowden, Ph. D.

(Jonny Bowden, PhD, CNS is a board certified nutritionist with graduate degrees in nutrition and psychology. Visit his Web site Jonny Bowden Solutions.)

There are many superfoods that never see the inside of a shopping cart. Some you've never heard of, and others you've simply forgotten about. That's why we've rounded up the best of the bunch. Make a place for them on your table and you'll instantly upgrade your health -- without a prescription.

Beets
These grungy-looking roots are naturally sweeter than any other vegetable, which means they pack tons of flavor underneath their rugged exterior.

Why they're healthy: Think of beets as red spinach. Just like Popeye's powerfood, this crimson vegetable is one of the best sources of both folate and betaine. These two nutrients work together to lower your blood levels of homocysteine, an inflammatory compound that can damage your arteries and increase your risk of heart disease. Plus, the natural pigments -- called betacyanins -- that give beets their color have been proved to be potent cancer fighters in laboratory mice.

How to eat them: Fresh and raw, not from a jar. Heating beets actually decreases their antioxidant power. For a simple single-serving salad, wash and peel one beet, and then grate it on the widest blade of a box grater. Toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the juice of half a lemon.

You can eat the leaves and stems, which are also packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Simply cut off the stems just below the point where the leaves start, and wash thoroughly. They're now ready to be used in a salad. Or, for a side dish, sauté the
leaves, along with a minced clove of garlic and a tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil, in a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Cook until the leaves are wilted and the stems are tender. Season with salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Cabbage
Absent from most American kitchens, this cruciferous vegetable is a major player in European and Asian diets.

Why it's healthy: One cup of chopped cabbage has just 22 calories, and it's loaded with valuable nutrients. At the top of the list is sulforaphane, a chemical that increases your body's production of enzymes that disarm cell-damaging free radicals and reduce your risk
of cancer. In fact, Stanford University scientists determined that sulforaphane boosts your levels of these cancer-fighting enzymes higher than any other plant chemical.

How to eat it: Use cabbage as your sandwiches instead of wheat bread to add a satisfying
crunch. Or, for an even better sandwich topping or side salad, try an
Asian-style slaw. Here's what you'll need.

4 Tbsp olive or avocado or walnut oil

Juice of two limes

1 Tbsp sriracha, an Asian chili sauce you can find in the
international section of your grocery store

1 head napa cabbage, finely chopped or shredded

1/4 cup toasted nuts

1/2 cup shredded carrots

1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Whisk together the oil, lime juice, and sriracha. Combine the remaining ingredients in a large mixing bowl and toss with the dressing to coat. Refrigerate for 20 minutes before serving. The slaw will keep in your fridge for 2 days.

Guava
Guava is an obscure tropical fruit that's subtly acidic, with sweetness that intensifies as you eat your way to the center.

Why it's healthy: Guava has a higher concentration of lycopene -- an antioxidant that fights prostate cancer -- than any other plant food, including tomatoes and watermelon. In addition, 1 cup of the stuff provides 688 milligrams (mg) of potassium, which is 63 percent more than you'll find in a medium banana. And guava may be the ultimate high-fiber food: There's almost 9 grams (g) of fiber in every cup.

How to eat it: Down the entire fruit, from the rind to the seeds. It's all edible -- and nutritious. The rind alone has more vitamin C than you'd find in the flesh of an orange. You can score guava in the produce section of higher-end supermarkets or in Latin grocery stores—or at the Dragonfly Ranch from the tree Phoenix planted!

Swiss chard
Hidden in the leafy-greens cooler of your market, you'll find this slightly bitter, salty vegetable, which is actually native to the Mediterranean.

Why it's healthy: A half cup of cooked Swiss chard provides a huge amount of both lutein and zeaxanthin, supplying 10 mg each. These plant chemicals, known as carotenoids, protect your retinas from the damage of aging, according to Harvard researchers. That's because both nutrients, which are actually pigments, appear to accumulate in your retinas, where they absorb the type of shortwave light rays that can damage your eyes. So the more lutein and zeaxanthin you eat, the better your internal eye protection will be.

How to eat it: Chard goes great with grilled steaks and chicken, and it also works well as a bed for pan-seared fish. Wash and dry a bunch of Swiss chard, and then chop the leaves and stems into 1-inch pieces. Heat a tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil in a large sauté pan or wok, and add two garlic cloves that you've peeled and lightly crushed. When the oil is heated, add the chard. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, until the leaves wilt and the stems are tender. Remove the garlic cloves and season the chard with salt and pepper.

Cinnamon
This old-world spice usually reaches most men's stomachs only when it's mixed with sugar and stuck to a roll.

Why it's healthy: Cinnamon helps control your blood sugar, which influences your risk of heart disease. In fact, USDA researchers found that people with type-2 diabetes who consumed 1 g of cinnamon a day for 6 weeks (about 1/4 teaspoon each day) significantly reduced
not only their blood sugar but also their triglycerides and LDL (bad) cholesterol. Credit the spice's active ingredients, methylhydroxychalcone polymers, which increase your cells' ability to metabolize sugar by up to 20 times.

How to eat it: You don't need the fancy oils and extracts sold at vitamin stores; just sprinkle the stuff that's in your spice rack (or in the shaker at Starbucks) into your coffee or on your oatmeal.

Purslane
Although the FDA classifies purslane as a broad-leaved weed, it's a popular vegetable and herb in many other countries, including China, Mexico, and Greece.

Why it's healthy: Purslane has the highest amount of heart-healthy omega-3 fats of any edible plant, according to researchers at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The scientists also report that this herb has 10 to 20 times more melatonin -- an antioxidant that may inhibit cancer growth -- than any other fruit or vegetable tested.

How to eat it: In a salad. Think of purslane as a great alternative or addition to lettuce: The leaves and stems are crisp, chewy, and succulent, and they have a mild lemony taste. Look for it at your local farmer's market, or Chinese or Mexican market. It's also available at some Whole Foods stores, as an individual leafy green or in premade salad mixes. At Dragonfly it is in the garden and is the base of many of our fresh salad dressings (see past Dragonflyer newsletters).

Pomegranate juice
A popular drink for decades in the Middle East, pomegranate juice has become widely available only recently in the United States.

Why it's healthy: Israeli scientists discovered that men who downed just 2 ounces of pomegranate juice daily for a year decreased their systolic (top number) blood pressure by 21 percent and significantly improved bloodflow to their hearts. What's more, 4 ounces provides 50 percent of your daily vitamin C needs.

How to drink it: Try 100 percent pomegranate juice from Pom Wonderful. It contains no added sugars, and because it's so powerful, a small glassful is all you need. (For a list of retailers, go to www.pomwonderful.com.)

Goji berries
These raisin-size fruits are chewy and taste like a cross between a cranberry and a cherry. More important, these potent berries have been used as a medicinal food in Tibet for over 1,700 years.

Why they're healthy: Goji berries have one of the highest ORAC ratings -- a method of gauging antioxidant power -- of any fruit, according to Tufts University researchers. And although modern scientists began to study this ancient berry only recently, they've found that the sugars that make goji berries sweet reduce insulin resistance -- a risk factor of diabetes -- in rats.

How to eat them: Mix dried or fresh goji berries with a cup of plain yogurt, sprinkle them on your oatmeal or cold cereal, or enjoy a handful by themselves. You can find them at specialty supermarkets or at gojiberries.us. They are so popular now I have seen them at Costco.

Dried plums
You may know these better by the moniker "prunes," which are indelibly linked with nursing homes and bathroom habits. And that explains why, in an effort to revive this delicious fruit's image, producers now market them under another name.

Why they're healthy: Prunes contain high amounts of neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acids, antioxidants that are particularly effective at combating the "superoxide anion radical." This nasty free radical causes structural damage to your cells, and such damage is thought to
be one of the primary causes of cancer.

How to eat them: As a simple taste treat.

Pumpkin seeds
These jack-o'-lantern waste products are the most nutritious part of the pumpkin.

Why they're healthy: Downing pumpkin seeds is the easiest way to consume more magnesium. That's important because French researchers recently determined that men with the highest levels of magnesium in their blood have a 40 percent lower risk of early death than those with the lowest levels. And on average, men consume 353 mg of the mineral daily, well under the 420 mg minimum recommended by the USDA.

How to eat them: Whole, shells and all. (The shells provide extra fiber.) Roasted pumpkin seeds contain 150 mg of magnesium per ounce; add them to your regular diet and you'll easily hit your daily target of 420 mg. Look for them in the snack or health-food section of your
grocery store, next to the peanuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds.

The science is clear: Plant foods are good for you. And the credit often goes to chemicals they produce called antioxidants. Just as the name suggests, antioxidants help protect your cells against oxidation. Think of oxidation as rust. This rust is caused by free radicals, which are unstable oxygen atoms that attack your cells, inducing DNA damage that leads to cancer. Thankfully, antioxidants help stabilize free radicals, which keeps the rogue atoms from
harming your cells.

So by eating more antioxidant-rich foods, you'll boost the amount of the disease-fighting chemicals floating in your bloodstream. The result: Every bite fortifies your body with all-natural preventive medicine.

Mothers and Daughters

The theme for the last few weeks is “Mother/daughter”--not surprising since my mother helped me build this beautiful retreat in paradise.
First, Cat Gwynn came for an 8 day visit to heal from the loss of her mother/family and more recently, her brother-in-law. Her new photo book (with fantastic quotes and stories about her mother), Hungry: The Insatiable State of America, is GREAT! Someone from the Northwest dropped by and immediately wanted to know about the book that is in search of the right publisher. He made a suggestion that Cat is following up on.
So who checks in while Cat is here? Greta, who just turned 90, and her daughter, Kim. They all have a ball together. We celebrated with a turkey dinner, all feeling very much like family.
Cat took some classic photos of mother/daughter at Hookena Beach. They only stayed 4 days but it felt that we were old friends by the time they left.
Next: A single mother with her adopted daughter, Sophia, from China--just turning 10 years old. A highlight of that visit was when Cat and Sophia got the giggles while Phoenix was playing his guitar. He made up a song--kept using the word “laugh”. Each time he said “laugh” they would peal into hysterics. Cat took photos of Amie and Sophia making the jade vine lei.
When they left, Laura arrived from Chicago to recuperate a bit from dealing with her mother having cancer in the 4th stage. She and science fiction thriller author of Shadows in the Mist, Brian Moreland, helped me gather plumeria (the funeral flower) for Cat to use while releasing some of her mother’s ashes at sea.
Laura began to cry when I mentioned about it being like a “dress rehearsal” for her. Cat held her and gave her words of encouragement. Cat’s experience has deepened her compassion and increased her timber.
Laura has a story she says she wants to write when she gets home. She was told to find Michael at Hookena and ask him to sing a song for her. Sure enough, that happened! I will share the story when she writes to me.

And the blog begins

Writing this as the sun is setting over the South Kona Coast and the wind is singing in the giant cathedral-like wind chimes, I feel the crystal far-infrared bed warming my backside. What a blessing to have such a good life!
Just as i was starting to write this opening blog, Naoko came and told me she is having a difficult time with her divorce and needs to be alone. She wanted to give me money for the flower essences I made for her broken heart. I told her I have a spare room for her to stay at the Dragonfly Cottage. "You would want this for me if I was having a life change and needed private time," I told her. I gave her a hug and then had her lay on the biomatt while I gave her a LaHoChi treatment. (www.LaHoChi.com i learned about from Jonathan) She looked very relaxed after the treatment and felt grateful to be able to go to Sufi Dances of Peace. Laura (from Chicago) went with her. Nice for these two single moms to spend time together singing of peace and love.
I've been intending to write a blog because each day, so many beautiful events happen and I learn interesting things about healing that i want to share. Being on the Big Island of Hawaii, inside the Healing Triangle, magic happens all the time.
My "Recipe for Good Health" keeps growing so fast that i don't have time to keep adding to it. Perhaps i can give a Health Tip or two a day. I just had a taste of my super home made yogurt and recalled my new dear friend, Cat Gwynn (www.catgwynn.com photography) asking me to send her the information about how to make this tart and probiotic-rich yogurt.
1. the yogurt maker, found on the internet, is called the Miracle Yourt Maker from Miracle Exclusives.
2. the powerful probiotic starter comes from Jeff Brooker( )
3. the organic half and half preferably comes from grass-fed cows
4. the starter needs to be mixed into the organic half and half, placed inside its quart container in the yogurt maker and allowered to "cook" for 24 hours--to eliminate lactose.
5. eating this yogurt is best done after blessing it, with a feeling of gratitude and peace.
I will try to give at lease one health tip every time I blog. I offer this with warm Aloha,
Barbara
